I can’t decide if this is karmic retribution or Christmas come early!

Although we didn’t think it would be possible to silence Ann Coulter, the leggy reaction-ary broke her jaw and the mouth that roared has been wired shut…

Turkey Time

Posted by Bayou on November 24th, 2008

I met one of my co-workers in our warehouse and he (being from Louisiana) asked if I had family coming up for Thanksgiving. I happily told him that my mom was coming up this year and I was really looking forward to her visit. Then, he asked, If I was going to help. Help?, I responded confused. “Are you going to help your momma with the cooking?” Oooh, no no no, I am the one cooking. I had to laugh out loud after he was around the corner because I was just thinking, I’m not even going to get into what happened* the last time mom was in charge!

*Anyone who had read my blog for any length of time knows that I can’t let the holidays pass without bringing this up. It’s just too classic.

Bargain Hunting

Posted by Bayou on November 21st, 2008

We are a week away from “Black Friday” and I can only imagine the deals that will be coming up this season, considering how hard pressed retailers are to draw in customers. I never gave a damn about the Post-Thanksgiving shopping tradition before the dawn of the internet. I have no desire to get trampled by frantic bargain shoppers and have never understood those that would fist fight over the latest and greatest kids toys. What a great example to set and all.

My aversion to that craziness doesn’t mean that I don’t like some thrifty shopping, I just prefer to do it from the comfort of my own computer. In fact, I’m kind of obsessed with checking Woot, the Amazon Gold Box deals and of course, the Friday Sale. Then there is the holy grail of bargains that only comes once a year, Amazon’s Customer Vote, which just announced what’s up for grabs in this years virtual goody bag… Read the rest of this entry »

Rainbow Country

Posted by Bayou on November 19th, 2008

With the recent passing of Prop 8, protests have erupted all over the country. I would liked to have been at the march here over the weekend but we had a late night Friday and damn, activists sure do get up early in the morning! That doesn’t negate the feeling of pride that I’ve had looking over the photos and seeing a huge rainbow flag peacefully marching through the streets of my city. It has felt like a new dawn approaching since November 4th and many of us are just wondering, what’s the next step?

I must admit that at first I was both excited and disappointed in Obama’s newly launched site, Change.gov. It was pretty miraculous to have a transition site launched in the time frame that they did it but I was discouraged to not see any LGBT issues on the 1.0 version of the agenda. Then the agenda disappeared altogether but alas it was only temporary.

I’m happy to report that the Civil Rights section now hosts several issues on the agenda that are very important to myself and other LGBT readers and supporters…

• Repeal Don’t Ask-Don’t Tell

• Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights for LGBT Couples & Oppose a Constitutional Ban on Same-Sex Marriage (I assume this means that states would decide if there is a difference between a marriage and a union?)

• To pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.

• Implement a comprehensive national HIV/AIDS strategy to reduce HIV infections, increase access to care and reduce HIV-related health disparities.

• To strengthen federal hate crimes legislation and expand hate crimes protection by passing the Matthew Shepard Act.

Yes, we still have a long way to go but it certainly feels good that our country is beginning to recognize us as citizens, as people, and also recognizes SCIENCE as a vital part of our existence. We may have to fight the H8ters but we have the power of the hope and community on our side.

The Postponed Prince

I just stumbled across a new trailer for the latest Potter installment but don’t think that I’m not still angry that they pushed back the release date.

Meaner than Mama!

Posted by Bayou on November 18th, 2008

It is no big secret than I am a carnivore but I can’t resist sharing PETA’s own twisted version of “Cooking Mama” for your entertainment. You better play the game* before it’s pulled for obvious copyright infringement!

I guess you have to have a dark sense of humor to enjoy this as much as I did but there still won’t be ToFurkey on my table come Thanksgiving.

*I had to remove the embedded video because I couldn’t listen to my blog scream every time it loaded!

Mental Mud

Posted by Bayou on November 10th, 2008

I feel like I have written several dozen posts in my head during the last week but time has not been on my side. Every November sneaks up on me, which at work means time for our annual food show that serves as a reminder of all the job titles I have. I feel a bit robbed that I haven’t had an opportunity to really process, much less write about, the election results.

Not to mention some cool articles that I’ve bumped into during my five minute mental smoke breaks. Which also brings to mind my process of quitting the other habit of sucking in toxins. That’s another post that turned into a small novel with no ending chapter. Yeah, I’m feeling rather scattered. Since I don’t have the energy for anything too deep tonight (especially after splitting a split with myself) I’m just going to wade in the mental muddy water…

I had to revel in the irony after reading that Isaiah Washington slammed Grey’s Anatomy for the recent questionable firing of Brooke Smith. Then his ego stepped back into the interview when asked for the solution to fix the show. “Bring Burke back!”

Changing the channel…

Engineers at the University of Washington have developed contact lenses with integrated circuitry. This achievement could lay the groundwork for the “bionic eye.” Researchers hope that the lenses, once completed, will allow users to zoom in on distant objects and see useful facts. Future applications might allow drivers and pilots to see their direction and speed projected across their view or to surf the Web without a monitor.

Check out the wicked cool photos of the gadget eye.

WOAH, talk about a headline that you can’t resist clicking… Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron paint a transsexual lesbian love story.

Damn, the macbook is nearly out of power and I’m too tired to move over aaaall the way to the other side of the couch to plug it up. Oh well, that’s enough dirt to wade through for now. Good’nite.
