Fine Food & Vino, Kudzu & Muscadines December 6th, 2005
My mom called me a few days ago with a brilliant plan. “We’ve all decided that we don’t want a traditional Christmas this year so what do you think about having a Cajun Christmas instead?” Of course my reply was, “I’m making the beignets!” It made me think back to several years ago when I had no money to decorate for Christmas so I decked the halls (and the tree) out with all sizes and colors of Mardi Gras beads.
I’m excited that this year instead of Thanksgiving: Part 2 (turkey, dressing, ect) we will be stuffing ourselves with crawfish etoufee, red beans & rice, jambalaya and pralines. I should probably go ahead and order some hurricane mix while I’m at it. To keep in style with the theme, I’m going to insist that we also be build a large bonfire* on Christmas Eve. Nothing says “Happy Holidays” like a bunch of drunken southerners creating our own pyrotechnics.

*One French Louisiana twist to the holiday festivities that isn’t found anywhere else is the tradition of the Bonfires dating back to the 1800s. Hundreds of Christmas bonfires light the banks of the Mississippi River to guide Papa Nöel’s (the Cajun version of Santa Claus) pirogue (a shallow, wooden canoe) to deliver gifts to all good little Cajun children.

Mmmmm… beignets!
Don’t know if I could go for the crawdads, though.

I agree, Bonnie. Beignets, oui! Crawfish, non!

Duh- crawfish season doesn’t start til January!
And when it’s cooked in etoufee you probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between it and shrimp. Mmm…etoufee. Ok, I must go remove the drool from my keyboard now.

Gah! Shrimp- eew!
And who cares when the season starts?! I still do not find crustaceans all that tasty.

The season matters because unfortunately we won’t be able to have crawfish while I’m home. And since you’ve never tried it, no talking smack please.

L…You’ve never tried crawfish etoufee and you be talkin’ shit about it? Mmmmm crawfish etoufee with some warm, crusty French bread and red wine mmmmmmm…I want some now.
You know, coconut crusted shrimp just might change your mind about shrimp.

It should start sometimes Friday night and last for about a week!

It seems to me that ‘a traditional Christmas’ was highly unlikely in any event for a girl with a large collection of Mardi Gras beads.

Hahaha! Good point there, David. I still have beads from the one and only Mardi Gras that I attended and that was several years ago. I drove a Jeep wrangler at the time and the back end was actually weighed down from all the beads that I collected. Perhaps before Fat Tuesday rolls back around this year I can find where some of those pictures are hiding.

If I hate shrimp and most other seafood, then I see no reason to try it. I can’t tolerate the consistency- it literally makes me gag. So based on that, I think I am perfectly legit in saying YUCK. It’s fine if everyone else wants to eat it. But count me out. And for the record, I wasn’t talking “smack” about the food, merely stating my dislike of crustaceans- oceanic or freshwater.

My darling little fish (Pisces) refuses to eat her own kind. That’s ok though- more seafood for ME!
Love you, babe!

I have been a bad girl this year. I am not sure if Papa Nöel will visit or not. Maybe he will see our bonfire from afar and visit anyway. Let’s keep our fingers crossed! Good friends, good food and alcohol will suffice though!

OMG, that sounds delicious. Screw turkey!
December 9th, 2005 at 8:50 am
Ooooh yeeah! You may remember that I’ve already had my hand up a turkey’s ass once this year…once is enough.
Now bring on the gumbo!

don’t know if you’ll get this, but, for what it’s worth, here goes:
While googling for some Louisiana Christmas clip art, I came across this print on your blog site of Santa eating crawfish. . . . Can you give me any info on obtaining/using this graphic? The artist? Would love to have some cards printed, but wanted to get the go-ahead from the powers that be.
Thanks,
Teresa
